In 1964, while she was stationed in Ankara, Turkey, Clara met and married Jimmie Orville Powell, a native of Evansville, Indiana. The two of them resided in Evansville and later in Indianapolis, Indiana, before divorcing in 1976. While she was living in Evansville, Clara obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Evansville.
Clara was an avid reader. At one point, she had a collection of over one thousand books.
Clara was preceded in death by both of her parents; by her siblings, Irene Mabe, Frank Mabe, and Dick Mabe; and by her daughter, Valerie Powell. She is survived by her brother, Don Mabe of Walnut Shade, Missouri; her daughters, Debra Powell and Teresa Powell Kidd of Indianapolis, Indiana; and her three grandchildren, Tyler Kidd, Tanner Kidd, and Trinity Kidd.
Graveside services with full military honors will take place on Friday, June 22, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana.
