Delmer Ray Sheffield was born March 10, 1920 in Texas, son of William Ervin Sheffield (1862-1939) and Alice Valeria Tigert (1880-1967). Delmer had a number of brothers and sisters, including a twin sister named Faye.

The 1930 Federal Census for Bentley, Oklahoma (Atoka County) shows Ray Sheffield, age 10, born in Texas; living with his father, William E. Sheffield, a farmer, age 69, born in Arkansas; and his mother, Alice V. Sheffield, age 48, born in Texas. Also living in the household were Delmer's siblings: Alma T. Sheffield, age 25; Arthur V. Sheffield, a farmer, age 19; Jessie W. Sheffield, a farmer, age 16; Ezekiel W. Sheffield, age 13; Faye Sheffield (twin), age 10; and Ruth D. Sheffield, age 8; all born in Texas except the youngest, Ruth, who was born in Oklahoma.

Delmer married Josephine Jewel (maiden name unknown) and they had two children: Alice Faye Sheffield and Herbert D. Sheffield (1946-1971).

Delmer died December 17, 2004 in Lane, Oklahoma (Atoka County) and was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Antlers, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County).
