Owatonna Resident, 84 Years Old, Dies at Hospital Sunday

Had Completed 1,050 Volunteer Hours on Red Cross Work

Mrs. Carrie Lavine Hemingway, who at 84 years of age had completed more than 1,050 hours of volunteer work, for the Red Cross, died late Sunday at the City hospital. She had been ill less than two weeks.

A native of Wisconsin, she was born in Jefferson, July 18, 1859 and spent her youth there. She was married to John T. McKay and following his death, in 1920 to Aaron Hemingway.

He died in 1937, and she continued to make her home in this city. She was active in the Red Cross in both World Wars, and last year was honored with a "300" hour pin. She has devoted well over 1,000 hours to knitting of helmets and gloves in the present war.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and for many years was a member of the Ladies Aid Society.

Surviving are three sons, Leslie McKay of Eau Claire, Wis., Stanley H. of St. Paul and J. Gordon McKay of Cleveland, Ohio. Also surviving are six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Hatti Reynart of Watertown, Wis., and Mrs. Hettie Hager of Jefferson, Wis.



Funeral services Wednesday will be held at 2 o'clock at the DeGroat Funeral Home, and will be conducted by Rev. Howard Bloom, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Remains will be taken to Jefferson, Wis. for interment.



Remains will be in state from 3 to 5 this afternoon and from 7 to 9 o'clock tonight at the DeGroat Funeral Home, and Wednesday until the hour of the service.

Carrie had a daughter who was born March 28, 1878 in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. This daughter was given up for adoption to an acquaintance of Carrie's father Aaron. The couple who adopted her were James V. Jones & his wife Mary Anna Duncan. (They lived in Oskosh, Wisconsin.) They named the baby Genevieve M. Jones (AKA Jenny).
