E.C. HEMINGWAY

(from the Oconomowoc Enterprise...this obituary was reprinted in the Jefferson Banner, Jefferson, Wis. Thursday, April 3, 1930)

E.C. Hemingway, well known old resident of this community, formerly in the furniture and undertaking business in Oconomowoc, and a veteran of of the Civil War, died at his home in the town of Summit Saturday afternoon, death following a long period of enfeebled health.

Mr. Hemingway was born May 14, 1844, in Ontario, Canada, coming to Wisconsin the same year with his parents who made the trip to this state with an ox team, a slow and tedious journey. The family located west of Watertown, and this state continued to be his home, with the exception of seven years when he went back to Canada to reside.

Mr. Hemingway enlisted in a Wisconsin regiment in the Civil war, in 1863, and served until the close. He saw action in several notable battles of the war. He was a member of Co. E. Fourth Wisconsin, Volunteer Cavalry.

He made his home in Jefferson county during his childhood, his later life being spent in the city and in the town of Summit, where he had won a prominent place in the life of the community and was one of the most respected and honored citizens.

Mr. Hemingway was married to Miss Millie Johnson on August 8th, 1865, at Oakland, Wis., her death occurring on September 22,1888. A few years later on October 12, 1892, he was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Neff of Waterville, who with one son, Aaron Hemingway of Summit, survive. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Adney Henry, Heth Hemimgway, Mrs. Hettie Hager all of Jefferson; Mrs. Charles Reynard of Watertown and Mrs. Carrie MacKay of Owatonna, Minn.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Lyke chapel with burial in the Summit cemetery. Rev. O.W. Smith, pastor of the Congregational church, conducted the services.

Note from Shirley Hemingway:Edmond's parents were Aaron Hemingway (1819-1894) & Eleanor Harris Hemingway (1822-1845). Evidently Edmond's mother died when he was very young. His Dad Aaron then married his wife's sister Harriet Harris. Harriet also died at a young age...leaving young children motherless.
