WINSLOW - Norman was born at home in Winslow, the son of Adelard J. Huard and Julianna (Albert) Huard, on June 9, 1921. He was the eldest son in a family of eight.

Norman often described his early life growing up on Sand Hill in Winslow as being part of a close-knit community in the midst of the Great Depression.

When World War II broke out, he entered the Army Air Corps and was stationed in England, where he served from 1942 until peace was declared in 1945. Norman was fascinated and intrigued by the many historical sites he was able to visit while on leave and remained an ardent student of history as a result of this.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to Winslow, where he soon met and fell in love with his future wife, Gertrude "Trudy" Reynolds. They were married on Oct. 19, 1947, and remained together until her death in 2004. They had two children, Norman Frank and Deborah Marguerite.

Norman completed his career as a licensed practical nurse in 1983 and he and Trudy packed up and moved to a retirement community in southern California. They returned to Maine in 2004 as their health began to fail.

He is survived by his two children and five siblings, Stella, who also resides at the Woodlands, Robert, who lives in Winslow, Roland, who resides in Connecticut, Donald, who resides in Augusta, and Jimmy, who currently lives in Florida.

A graveside service will be held for Norman at Pine Grove Cemetery. (Morning Sentinel 6/14/2012)
