HISTORY OF BOW VALLEY CHURCH [Catholic}
The first settlers of Bow Valley were: Werner Marx; John Rameil; Frank Stoppert; Conrad Wiesener; Joe and Frank Hochstein; Frank Heger; Joe Kaiser and John Heuschen. They came from Westfallen, Germany. They worked for some time in the copper mines near Lake Superior. Having saved a few hundred dollars they decided to go west. They arrived in Bow Valley in 1858 to 1865. A few years later the following families who were good friends of the first settlers, came to the colony, Henry Meirose; Frank Subeck; Frank Arens, John Tigges; Henry Kruse; William Arens; Herman Sudbeck; Anton Pick; Herman Wiebelhaus; Joe Bruening; Casper Slatheck; Henry Thoene; Willibald Schulte; Anton Heimes; Stephen Stevens and Fred Goldkamp.
They attended the St. Helena Church until the year 1875 when they built a church of their own. It was constructed on the same location as the present church. The size of the building was 36 x 90 and estimated about $4,000. The inside furnishings, altars and pews were made by William Arens. The first mass was celebrated on the Feast of all Saints, Nov. 1st, of the same year. Rt. Rev. Bishop James O'Connor appointed Father Fred Uhing first pastor in 1877. The parish was a mission to St. Helena, of which Ft. Daracher was pastor.
A log house was occupied by the first priest for one winter and a log house also served for the first school which was built in 1873, one half mile east of the present school. The first term of three months was taught by George Dickman. The second year Livingston Howard and the third year George Dickman. Then the school still standing a short distance west of the present church was erected as a Public School in 1876.
The Hartington, Constance, Wynot, St. James and Fordyce parishes formerly belonged to Bow Valley parish until each built a church of their own. The Hartington Church was built in 1884, the St. James in 1904, Wynot in 1909 and Fordyce in 1908.
In 1894 a picnic was held for the benefit of building another school. Then a Parochial school was built in 1895. Fr. Rehback was transferred to Crawford, Nebraska, and the present pastor of Rev. Anthony Birbach took charge of the parish on May 1st, 1901. Since the church had become too small to accomodate all the faithful on Sundays, preparations were made for the ******** of a larger and more substantial temple of God. The size of the church is 130 x 54 x 72, cost complete $35,000 including all new furniture, pipe organs, altars, etc. The main altar was bought in St. Louis and the side altars was donated by Mrs. Christina Lange. Two of the bells in the present church were from the first church. The dedication took place on Thanksgiving Day 1904. A new school was built in 1910, valuing $15,000. In 1927 a new parsonage was built. Rev. A. Birnbach is the pastor of St. Peter and Paul Church.
