Alta was my mother's cousin.
Alta's mother died when she was 3 years of age. She lived with her grandmother until 1898 and then with her aunt Annie Ragland in St. Louis.
It was there in 1898 that she was stricken with Infantile Paralysis (Polio) and left crippled. In 1908 she lived with the J.B. Zink family in Cinton Co. Then after her sister Pearl married Willie Michel, she lived the remainder of her life with them. She was never married and could not attend school because of her disability, but nevertheless, she was an avid reader and self educated. She was also an accomplished seamstress and earned extra money for the family. She was very active in the Baptist Church and Sunday School.
