Clarence Potts, Reeve Farmer is Found Dead
Verdict of Suicide is Returned by Coroner Following Inquest
Clarence Theodore Potts, 64 year-old Reeve township farmer, was found dead about noon Monday in his home near Pennyville by a nephew, Paul Potts.
Dr. H. O. Norton, county coroner, said today he was preparing a verdict of suicide. The coroner's inquest revealed Mr. Potts had shot himself through the right temple with a 22 rifle and the time of death was set by the coroner at 9:30 a.m. Monday. A suicide note indicated that Mr. Potts was ill and despondent.
Mr. Potts was the son of Alex and Martha (Prater) Potts and was born April 27, 1888, in Reeve Township. His first marriage was to Dona (sic) Webber and his second was to Norma Hiersman.
Mr. Potts was a member of the Oak Grove United Brethren Church and the Moose lodge. In addition to his widow, he leaves these children: Mrs. Elmer (Hazel) Hoffman, RR 1, Loogootee; Mrs. Charles (Genevieve) Smiley, and Mrs. John (Wilma) Myers, both of Indianapolis; Mrs. Norwood (Ruth) Smith, South Bend; Arnold Potts, city; Mrs. Howard (Wanda) Hostetler, Indianapolis and Dallas Potts, Tacoma, WA. Also surviving are six grandchildren; six brothers: Paul Potts, Wilton Potts, and Harley Potts, Reeve Township; Charles Potts, Gary, IN; Cleve Potts, Washington Township and Ross Potts, Montgomery; and a sister, Mrs. Lettie Shelton, city.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Oak Grove church, Reeve Township, with Rev. Homer Leighty in charge and burial in the adjoining cemetery. Friends may call at the Gill chapel.
He was married on January 10, 1915 in Alfordsville, Daviess County, Indiana to Dona Agnes Webber.
He was married on September 8, 1951 in Washington, Daviess County, Indiana to Norma (Pride) Heirsman.
