Anna Hayward Merritt brought into her life and work a civic spirit which made her a real asset to the community. In addition to being a teacher of exceptional ability, she was a citizen who felt a keen interest in raising the educational and cultural level of Lockport. She graduated from Lockport Union school. She taught first at the Wilson Union school in 1886 for a year and then for 5 years at Lockport Union school. For 15 years she served with distinction as a member of the Board of Education. She also devoted 10 years on the Board of Trustees of the Lockport Public Library. She always took a sincere interest in all undertakings. She was a founder of the Mothers' Club and New Century Club. She was a member of the Saturday Club, the Monday Reading Club, Women's Church and Missionary Society (First Presbyterian Church) and the Secretary of the NY PTA (Mother's Congress of NY) from 1910-1912.

Created an extensive genealogy for both her husband and her own families. This work is compiled in 15 binders. In addition to the standard genealogy information, it contains delightful family stories of the early settlers of Niagara County, NY.
