Mrs. Minnie Whelan Dies At Home Here
Mrs. Minnie H. Whelan, 609 Moro street, died Monday evening at her home after an illness of approximately five weeks. Mrs. Whelan, 88, was one of the oldest residents of Manhattan having been born near here on June 26, 1860. Her father, the late B. F. Palmer, was one of the original settlers of Manhattan coming here from Ohio. Mrs. Whelan was born at Palmer’s bend, a few miles east of this city. Her husband, C. W. Whelan, and a daughter, Gertrude, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Miss Erma Whelan of the home, a sister, Mrs. Mary Reyer, 821 Osage, and a brother, George W. Palmer, Kansas City, Mo., and a stepson, Frank S. Allen, of Manhattan and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Whelan was most active in the community, being a member of the First Baptist church, the Olive Branch Rebekah lodge Past Noble Grand club, the Women’s Relief corps, Wilbur Samuels auxiliary and the Daughters of Union Veterans. Services will be held Wednesday at 3 o’clock from the Burliew-Cowan chapel with Dr. Carleton E. Briggs in charge. Interment will be in Sunset cemetery.
