BIG FREIGHTER ANCHORS HERE DUE TO DEATH
To enable a son to be at the bedside of his dying mother and to permit him to remain for her funeral services the engines of a 600 foot streamer the Joshua A. Hatfield were stopped, the anchor was dropped and for 24 hours the big steel ship was halted on its course in St. Clair river Friday afternoon.
That was the tribute a corporation paid to the memory of Mrs. Arthur M. Conkey, wife of Capt. A. M. Conkey, veteran sailor of the lakes, and mother of Capt. Charles M. Conkey, master of the steamer Joshua A. Hatfield, who died Friday night at her home, 718 Erie Street.
A relief captain was sent to take command of the steamer.
Mrs. Conkey, whose maiden name was Wilhelmina Krousey (Krause) was born in Buffalo, Oct. 11, 1851. She came to Port Huron when a child with her parents. In 1872 she was married to Capt. Arthur M. Conkey, who for years sailed the great lakes. The marriage ceremony was performed by the late Rev. J. S. Hoyt, of the First Congregational church. Mrs. Conkey had been a member of that church ever since.
Mrs. Conkey was a woman of many friends. Besides raising a family of her own she also raised two of her grandchildren, one of them being under her care when but nine days old, following the death of the mother.
Mrs. Conkey leaves her husband, Capt. Arthur M. Conkey; two sons, Capt. Charles M. Conkey and Arthur T. Conkey; two grandchildren, Miss Phyllis Conkey, Chicago and Miss Elizabeth Conkey at home; also the following sisters and brother; Mrs. William May, Miss Anna Krousey, and Louis Krousey, this city and Edward Krousey, Ashtabula, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the family residence, 718 Erie Street.
