Michael Camp was born at Sonderreid, Baden before the formation of present day Germany. He was given the name Johann Georg Michael Kempf by his parents, Johann Heinrich Kempf and Anna Catharina Dosche. He immigrated to the United States in 1831, departing from Le Havre, France with his wife and young son. He arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 19 Oct with a second child as his daughter Mary was born during the voyage. By 1837 he had settled in Beaver County, Pennsylvania and was going by the name Michael Camp.
