Gertrude G. Coffey Grigg, known as Gertie, was the eighth of nine children born to William M. Coffey (1855-1932) and his wife Martha Jane Sharpe Coffey (1855-1935). Her father worked as an overseer in a cotton mill in Lincolnton, Lincoln Co., NC. At the age of 33, Gertie married a millworker, Charles ("Charlie") Grigg (1869-1951), as his second wife. The couple had three daughters: Ann Ruth (b. 1931), Dora (b. ca. 1933), and Ermentrude (b. ca. 1934). Shortly after their marriage, Charlie and Gertie moved to a farm in Charlie's native Cleveland Co. At sometime in the 1940s they returned to live outside of Lincolnton where Charlie died in 1951. Gertie lived in Lincolnton for the rest of her life.
