Richard Andrew Coffey was the second of nine children born to William M. Coffey (1855-1932) and his wife Martha Jane Sharpe (1855-1935). He was born in the upper Yadkin River Valley, known as Happy Valley, in Caldwell Co. where the Coffeys had settled more than a century before. Seeking greater opportunities, Richard's father moved the family to Lincolnton in Lincoln Co., NC where he found work as an overseer in a cotton mill. Richard found employment as a well driller in Lincolnton, and in retirement offered his services as a piano tuner.

Around 1907 Richard married Edna Laura McFadden (1887-1967). The couple had six children: William Glenn (b. 1908), Dennis Dixon (b. 1909), Lawrence S. (b. 1910), Mary Lou (b. 1911), Aleine (b. 1914), and Claude (b. 1915). Lawrence and Claude died in infancy.
