His parents removed to Holden, Worcester Co., Massachusetts in May 1762 when he was 11 and the family was warned-out on 10 May 1763. He married Esther Davis on 24 Feb 1780 at the First Congregational Church, Holden, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.
