It was at one of these dances at the Rainbow gardens in Red Wing in 1925 that I met Esther, who after four years of courtship, finally decided to marry me...

After four years of courtship, Esther and I decided to get married on June 25, 1929. It was the wedding anniversary date of my parents and my uncle and aunt. Esther was the only daughter of J. H. Pilgard, an only son, and a city girl. It was quite an undertaking for her to give up city conveniences like electricity, indoor plumbing and central heating which she was accustomed to having. We were married in the Pilgard home with a few relatives and close friends in attendance. Pastor marker performed the ceremony and Mrs. E. B. Thorstenson sang the solo. We spent our first married night in the new Nicollet Hotel in Minneapolis and continued on our honeymoon through Taylors Falls to Duluth. It was quite a trip for our 1923 Model T Ford Coupe to make. The whole venture - food, lodging, gas and all - cost $25. We returned home to live with dad and mother for a few months.

- Excerpts from Henry C. Hinrichs' 1982 book, "As I Remember - A Treatise on Early Rural Life in Goodhue County, Minnesota"
