I was supposed to be born on "Hogs Back", a farm on the west central side of Belvidere Township, on my father's birthday, September 25, 1904, and a girl. Instead I was born after my folks moved to the second farm they farmed, known as the Kolbe place in east central Goodhue Township on October 6, 1904, and a boy. Hogs back was a farm my maternal grandfather bought for his children to start farming on. In 1904 my folks had to move off to make room for the next one to start. In those days, October 1st was moving day and anyone moving to another farm moved on October 1st. That is how I was born on the Kolbe place on October 6.
In those days all births were in the home and presided over by either the husband or a neighbor lady. My paternal Grandmother {Catharina Wilkens Reese} was a sort of community nurse and midwife, and dad got her when I was born.
