Elsie Catherine Arp was born in Marshland, Oregon (4 miles west of Clatskanie) where her father had major timber holdings. When she was about four the family moved to a large home on Kirby Street in Portland. The residence stood at the east end of the Fremond bridge ramp near Emanuel Hospital.

Mr. Colvin subsequently bought a large farm on the banks of the Pudding River. It included a popular camping area with a store for vacationers. Catherine moved to the farm and became operator of the store.

About 1943, Catherine moved to Seattle, working for the Boeing Company. Some time later, possibly a year or so, she moved to Los Angeles continuing her career in the retail business then for Western Union, Pacific Mutual Insurance Company and Standard Oil Company. It was at the latter firm where she met her future husband, Clarence Arp.

In 1950, Catherine went to Washington, D.C. starting a new career in hotel management with the Statler Corporation. Upon completion of this training she returned to Los Angeles to work at the newly opened Statler Hotel. It was at this time she married Clarence Arp, living in Los Angeles until his sudden death in 1969.

Upon the death of her husband, Catherine moved to Seattle and in 1987 returned to her familiar Willamette valley living in Woodburn until her passing on June 6, 1989.

Memorial services were held at 2 pm, Saturday, June 17, 1989, at the Aurora Presbyterian Church. Arrangements by Everhart & Kent Funeral Home, Canby, OR.
