William Doke Scott was the son of John Doke Scott and his second wife, Margaret Virginia [Lucas] Scott. John Doke Scott became a Dentist and later practiced in West Virginia. William was raised in Auburn, Montgomery County, Virginia and, after adulthood, lived in Illinois; New Haven, Connecticut; Syracuse, New York; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

William graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign in 1910 with a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is listed on page 639 under Graduate Alumni for the 1910 U of I class.

William married Gertrude Niederman on September 23, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois. Gertrude was the daughter of Benjamin Niederman and Rose [Herzog] Niederman, who had immigrated to the United States from Ungvar, Hungary. Gertrude's father owned a furniture store in Chicago.

William and Gertrude had two children, Virginia Ruth and Robert F. Scott.

William Doke Scott passed away on February 6, 1949 in Pennsylvania. Gertrude joined him in death on July 31, 1959 and they are both laid to rest in the West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
