William F. Witt Dies Thursday In San Antonio

William (Willie) Fredrick Witt, prominent Gonzales business and churchman, died Thursday at 4:45 p.m. in the Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio following a long period of ill health.
Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist church Saturday morning at 10 o'clock with the pastor, the Rev. Roy H. May officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodmen of the World cemetery.
Seydler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
His father at one time was pastor of the old German Methodist church where Mr. Witt was a member before the merger of the church with the First Methodist in the early 1940's. He had served on the board of stewards for both churches as secretary for over 30 years. resigning when ill health overtook him.
Teaching a class in the Sunday school Mr. Witt also served as choir director for the young people of the Methodist church.
He was also a member of the 141st Infantry during World War 1, and was married on May 25, 1921, to Miss Zella Nagel. The couple had made thei home at 217 Smith street for many years. He was a painting contractor.
Mr. Witt had also served as Captain of the State Guard here in Gonzales during the last war, and was a member of the Gonzales Post No. 40, American Legion, since its organization in 1919, serving as its chaplain for almost 30 years, and also as post commander.
Survivors include his wife; his step-mother; two sons, Verlin Witt, head of the Warm Springs Brace Shope.
Also surviving are five grandchildren; two brothers, Herman Witt of Wichita Falls; and Milton Witt of Eagle Pass; and five sisters, Mrs. Helen Boehm, Waco; Mrs. Ida Boehm, Orange; Mrs. Perry Willmann, Marble Falls, Mrs. Silas Loeffler, Sonors; and Mrs. Ted Neffendorf of Fredericksburg.
His nephews will act as pallbearers.
