JEANNE JEWEL (GRUWELL) LANCRAIN

Jeanne was born and raised in Pasadena, California. Upon graduation she enrolled in Pasadena City College but the war was calling her to serve. She joined the United States Navy as a Navy Wave 1940 - 1945 and was stationed at the Naval Supply Depot, Oakland, California serving as a Second Class X, Navy Wave. She met and fell in love with a handsome young sailor also working there in Oakland named George Charles Lancrain.
When his commission was up in 1946, they married in Oakland and soon moved to George's hometown of Vermillion, South Dakota where daughter Elise Jean was born.
Their stay was brief in South Dakota as they soon returned to settle in Van Nuys, California where her father, Wilfred Gruwell was an executive for the telephone company. George began working for AT&T and was with them 25 years and proud of it.
Five years after Elise Jean was born, the twins, Lynne and Lorraine were born and the Lancrain's moved to a lovely new home in Encino where five years (again) after the twins were born, son Charles completed the family.
Jeanne and her Mother, Laura Marie (Searight) Gruwell joined the DAR in the 70's of which both were proud to be members. Jeanne was the Treasurer of Fernanda Maria Chapter for over twenty years and loved her membership in the organization. Three years ago she received her 40-year pin at a special meeting of the Chapter. It was a proud moment as an American.
Jeanne loved gardening and was an avid reader. She always had an article she wanted to share and extremely involved in history and her heritage. She was known for her smile and greetings as treasurer and enjoyed her many friendships in the DAR. She was a loving wife and mother and took interest in all of her children's activities.
Six years ago, January, George and Jeanne celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary with dear friends and relatives not knowing that in two months George Charles Lancrain would be laid to rest with full military honors.
Now, six years, 3 months later, Jeanne Jewel Lancrain is laid to rest. She passed away May 18th, 2012 in the wee morning hours. Her memorial service will be held soon and will include her long-term friends in the DAR and the Navy Waves. She will also receive full military honors even as her husband who also served the Country did. Both Jeanne and George Lancrain were patriots and proud Americans and were children of proud Americans and taught their children to be proud of their Country and heritage.
Jeanne is survived by her four children: Elise Jean, Lorraine Cangemi, Lynne Svedin and Charles, son in law, Raymond Svedin and a daughter in law, Carol Lancrain. Additionally, a brother in law, Donald survives her and two sisters in law, Delores and Margaret.
