Our beloved Ethel Simmons Kilgore was born on March 27, 1927 in Walton County, Georgia to the late Willie and Estella (Bell) Simmons. She was married to the late Ernest Kilgore, whom preceded her in death 20 years prior.

Ethel received her early education from Walton County Schools, and graduated from Carver High School. She received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Education from Albany State College, a Master of Arts (M. A.) degree from Atlanta University, a certificate in Administration from the University of Georgia.

Ethel launched her career in education as an elementary school teacher, teaching Kindergarten and First Grade. She also served as an Assistant Principal at Bailey-Johnson School in Alpharetta, Georgia. She was Teacher of the Year and a member of Who's Who in American Education during her tenure as an educator. Over the course of her career, she served as a Resource Teacher, Lead Reading Teacher, and a Curriculum Director for the Fulton County Board of Education. Upon retiring from a career of service in education, she worked with Young Funeral Home, further serving her community.

Ethel confessed her faith in Christ early in life and became a member of Spring Hill A. M. E. Zion Church. At Spring Hill she served tirelessly, participating in Sunday School, Bible Study, and Lay Council. She also served as the President of Deaconesses and was a faithful member of the Board of Trustees. She merged her passion for education and dutiful service to Christ by organizing and serving as Director of the Christian Education Department for 25 years. Ethel was also a member of the WH&OM Society, serving as District and Local President.

Through a life committed to service, Ethel sought out opportunities to be a part of several organizations. She was member of the Retired Teachers Association in Fulton and Walton counties, serving as President of the Walton County Chapter.

Ethel was member of the International Reading Association. She served as Worthy Matron of both district and local units of the Zebulon Star Order of Eastern Star and was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Ethel leaves to cherish her memory five sisters: Mable Simmons Gordon, Monroe, GA; Alice Simmons Morrow, Bethlehem, GA; Betty Simmons Skrine (Lucius), Covington, GA; Estella Simmons Bell (Johnny), Monroe, GA; and Margie Simmons Wimberly, Macon, GA. She has also left a lasting mark on a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Ethel was a very private and loving person. She would minister to others in caring, unselfish ways. She was like a mother to many. Ethel was a gift from God, and we will miss her. We love Ethel, but God loves her best. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, July 25, 2016 at 11 AM at The Spring Hill AME Zion Church, Rev. Donald Louis Patterson, Pastor, Rev. Rodney A. Lackey, Eulogist.
