Son of Asa Whitcomb and Hannah Smith. Married to Martha Stinson 7 December 1854 in Clinton County, Indiana.
John and Martha began thier marriage in a log cabin with the bedroom, living room and kitchen all in one large room. The story is told that at night when John would blow out the lamp, he would lose his sense of direction and would be unable to find the bed unless Martha called out to him. One night she pretended to be asleep and that time he stumbled all around the, getting behind the cookstove and knocking down utensils hung on the wall before Martha finally called out to him. In the late 1800's they built a frame house, where successive generations of the family lived. John died from a malignant sarcoma caused from an infected tooth. He is buried in the Whiteman Cemetery, Michigantown.
