OSBORNE COUNTY BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES - ROSS TOWNSHIP.

NATHAN N. ALLEN, farmer, P. O. Downs; was born in Bradford County, Pa., July 4, 1842, where he resided with his parents till he was four years of age; then they moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where he lived until he was seventeen years of age. He then went to Burlington, Iowa, where he worked as a teamster; then to Atchison County, Mo., where he clerked in a general store for two years, when he went to California, where he mined for four months, when he went to Salt Lake City, where he herded cattle for one year. Then he joined a train as a freighter, which business he followed until 1861, when he enlisted September 11, as private in Company M, First Colored Volunteer Infantry; discharged as private at Fort Leavenworth, October 31, 1864; he then returned to Atchison County, Mo., where he farmed until the spring of 1865, when he moved to Nemaha County, Neb., where he farmed one year, and engaged in mercantile business until 1874, when he came to Osborne County and homesteaded his present farm. He was married February 22, 1866, to Miss Ella Riordian. They have five children - Arthur S., Francis E., Charles A., Agnes E. and Willie.

N. N. ALLEN DEAD

N. N. Allen, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Emporia, died of hardening of the arteries Tuesday morning at 11:20 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Agnes E. Zernstein, in Fort Lauderdale.

Mr. Allen was born July 4, 1842 in Bradford county, Pa., and was married to Miss Ellen Reahrdon Ferbruary (sic) 22, 1866 in Nemaha City, Nebr. Mr. and Mrs. Allen came to Kansas in 1872 and settled on a homestead in Osborn county. In 1888 they went to Oregon for Mr. Allen's health and returned to Kansas in 1895, settling in Emporia.

Mr. Allen is survived by three children. They are: Mrs. Frances L. Morhoff, of San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Agnes Zernstein, Fort Lauderdale, and Willard O. Allen, of Emporia. One son, Arthur S. Allen, died 7 years ago, and another, Charles N. Allen, was killed in a mine accident in Victor, Colo., in 1896. Mrs. Allen died eight years ago.

Funeral services for N. N. Allen, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Emporia, who died Tuesday morning in Fort Lauderdale, were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Dumm chapel. Rev. O. M. Showalter, pastor of the First Baptist Church, conducted the services. Interment was made in Maplewood cemetery. Mrs. Charles O'Brien and Mrs. Roy Davis sang, accompanied by Miss Lucille Laird. The pallbearers were: L. T. Lang, Charles Hancock, Charles McCarthy, James Harvey, E. W. Daniels, and Daniel Mayes.
