The Smith family was driving home from Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico after a 3 month vacation there. Claire had decided to stay in Lubbock, Texas with her father during that time and had only been with the family for the last week or so because of previously planned singing engagements, (she had just been elected to the state of Texas supreme choir).

During that drive from Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico to Lubbock, Texas the August monsoon season was also occurring, The rainstorm was profound and the windshield wipers had stopped working. We continued to drive and we collided with a bus in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico.

In the family's station wagon there were four in the front seat, two in the second row and two in the last row. Claire was seated in the far right front seat that was struck by the bus. Teeta was seated beside Claire. On Teeta's lap was her four year old child, Christian. Jaime, the driver from Cuernavaca was right beside Teeta with Christian on her lap.

On the seat behind, was Angelique, who was sitting upright with her younger sister's head on her lap as Deirdre was feeling poorly.

Behind that seat was Charlotte and her elder brother Regan.

Both Teeta and Jaime broke their hip bones. Teeta also broke her jaw. Christian was relatively unscathed. Claire was killed on impact.

Angelique had hit the seat back in front of her so hard that she cut her top lip and lost two of her lower teeth. Her face hit the top of the front seat so hard that the skin around her left eye was torn. The impact also knocked Angelique unconscious.

Deirdre was not hurt in the collision.

In the back seat, Charlotte and Regan were unharmed.
