Ira J. Schroeder, 80, of Kempton, died Thursday in Kutztown Family Manor Nursing Home. He was the husband of Elda M. (Bond) Schroeder. They observed their 58th wedding anniversary in May.
A 1923 graduate of the Kutztown Normal School, he was a teacher for more than 47 years in Berks County, teaching 5th and 6th grades at the Hamburg Elementary School from 1962 until retiring in 1970. He also taught grade school at the Windsor Township School, 1934-62, and at the Albany Township School, 1923-34. He was a janitor for the Goodwill Fire Co., Kempton, 1946-69.
Schroeder and his wife operated the Berks-Lehigh Telephone Co. from their home, 1932-45. The exchange served most of Berks and Lehigh counties.
Born in Albany Township, he was a son of the late Jacob W. and Etta (Faust) Schroeder.
He was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Jerusalem (Red) Union Church, Kempton R.1., where he was a past Sunday school teacher and superintendent, a former councilman and past secretary of the church joint council. He also was chairman of the church's 225th anniversary celebration in 1972.
Surviving with his widow are two sons, Arlan R. of Kempton R.1 and Dennis J. of Kutztown; a brother, Miles L. of Kutztown; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the church. A calling hour will precede the services.
The Nester Funeral Home, Jacksonville, (Route 143), is in charge of arrangements.
