Saint of the Catholic Church. Considered one of the early saints of Christianity, he was a Roman citizen and soldier. He was charged with escorting the apostle Paul or Saul of Tarsus to Rome to his death and that on this occasion he converted to Christianity along with two other comrades who were horrified by the execution. The annals of the martyrs tell that he, having publicly declared their new faith, was immediately executed by beheading.
