Samuel McLain, the only child of Barbara Ann (née Hillsberry) and Charles F. McLain, was born on 10 November 1855 in East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois. The following year, his father petitioned for a divorce, and left the county. His mother remarried in 1859, and Samuel McLain afterward grew up in the township on the farm of his mother and step-father Isaac Painter with older half-siblings from his mother's reported first marriage, and later with younger half-siblings.

Samuel "McClain" and Miss Barbara "Hildeberry" were married on 1 September 1884 in East Bend Township. The couple were first cousins. The groom's step-father and the bride's father were both neighbors and comrades-in-arms, having served in the same company and regiment in 1865. The couple became the parents of eight children (two died in infancy).

Samuel "MacLane" and his family were enumerated in 1900 in East Bend Township, and he was enumerated twice in 1910: in Gibson City, Ford County, Illinois, and in East Bend Township. Samuel McClain worked as a farm laborer. By 1920, Samuel and Barbara McClain had separated. He later moved to Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan, where his younger half-brother Isaac Sherman Painter had moved in 1913. Samuel McClain died in 1927 in Alma.
