William worked as a miller. He married Phoebe Douglas in 1858.

He enlisted, with two of his brothers, as a Corporal in Company "I", 4th Virginia Cavalry on 8 May 1861. He was promoted Sergeant on 24 September 1861, and Commissary Captain for the regiment on 22 January 1862. He transferred to serve, with the rank of Major, on the staff of General Fitzhugh Lee on 8 November 1862. He served temporarily on the staff of Gen. Thomas L. Rosser in 1864 and 1865.

William is reported to have drowned in his bathtub. He buried near his parents, wife, and many other family members in his father's plot.
