Clarence enlisted and mustered into Co. "I", 4th Virginia Cavalry, on 8 May 1861.

He was killed in action at the Battle of Gaines' Mill, near Richmond, and is buried in his father's plot. His marker was placed in March 2017 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery."

"Then there is the handsome monument of Mrs. Abram Warwick and the grave of her son, dear Clarence, who died so nobly at Gaines' Mill in 1862. His grave seems to be always covered with fresh flowers, a beautiful offering to one whose young life was so freely given to his country." --(Judith Brockenbrough McGuire, quoted in Davis and Robertson, eds., "Virginia At War, 1865" (2012), p. 165.)
