JEFFREY NEWELL

AN OLD SETTLER DEAD

–We regret to announce that Elder Jeffry Newell, died in this town on the 23d inst., at the ripe age of 83.
The deceased was a resident of this county for about 20 years and was beloved and respected by a large circle of relatives and friends who deeply regret his death. He was an honest, upright man and we have never yet heard anyone utter an unkind word against Elder Newell, although he was not at all backward in expressing his political views, which, like those of the good old men of the past generation, were Democratic to the core, and of which the Elder was justly proud.
The deceased was the father of Stewart Newell and Mrs. Nightengale of Fond du Lac, and Jason Newell and Mrs. J. B. Sweet and Mrs. West of his county, and was grandfather of Gen. B. J. Sweet now of Illinois.

"Rev. Jeffrey was born in Stockbridge County, Vt.
Mr. Newell was a minister in the Christian Church, and preached the doctrines of that church for over fifty years with great success. He was of English origin, but his people had lived in America for probably 250 years. His children are seven sons and six daughters".
