DEATH BY DROWNING. -- We regret to learn that two young men named Jefferson Newell and William W. White, citizens of Stockbridge, in this county, were drowned in Lake Winnebago, on Saturday morning last by the capsizing of a boat. It seems that they in company with another young man, named Daniel Thurston, started from Stockbridge for Fond du Lac in a sail boat and when opposite the Brothertown line the boat capsized by a sudden gust of wind. They all clung to the boat for some time when White becoming benumbed dropped off in spite of his companions efforts to save him. Newell managed to hold on, until they were within a quarter of a mile from shore when he became insensible and would have fallen off were it not for Thurston’s assistance. When about fifty rods from shore, Thurston’s strength became exhausted. He helloed for help, and John Sears, who lived near the shore, swam to their assistance and got them ashore. Every effort was made to resuscitate Newell, but in vain.

He leaves a wife and child to lament his untimely fate. White’s body has not yet been recovered. – He was the only son of ‘Squire White of that town, and held the office of town clerk at the time of his death.
