Harriet was born in Clarke Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Duncan Peterson b. 10 Feb 1804 in Argyle, Washington County NY d. AFT 1885 in Kane County IL and Emily Gale b. 11 July 1801 in Ontario, Canada d. 8 Oct 1846 in Durham County, Ontario, Canada.

She married Zelotes B. DeLong (b. Sept 3, 1823 in Port Hope, Durham County, Ontario, Canada; d. 3 April 1909 in Delton , Sauk County, Wisconsin) on March 31, 1849.
In 1851 they removed to St. Charles [IL] going by boat around the lakes, and St. Charles has been their home during most of the intervening time. Mr. DeLong was a carpenter and many buildings in or near St. Charles and Elgin [IL] were erected by his aid or under his supervision. In the spring of 1888 he took a severe cold which terminated in rheumatic lung fever and he never regained his former activity, although working at his trade occasionally. After a severe attack of la grippe, he contracted bronchitis, which coupled with his advancing age caused his death. He died at the residence of his son, Alcenes. The burial was at Delton.

They were the parents of two sons and four daughters:
