He married Belinda Heller ca. 1849 and fathered Samuel Zachariah (b. Apr 1848), Alpheus L. E. (b. 22 May 1853), John C. Emery (b. 6 Nov 1858), infant girl (b./d. 16 Mar 1862), J. W. Mead (b. 11 Nov 1863, d. 9 Feb 1864), Ulysses Grant (b. 10 Nov 1864), Josephine Ella (b. 12 Jan 1868), Edna Bell (b. 3 May 1873, d. 2 May 1874). In 1850, he lived with his new family in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, in 1860 resided in Millerstown, Perry County, and in 1863 was a resident of Delaware Township, Juniata County.

A Civil War veteran, he first served at the rank of corporal with Co. E, 3rd Pennsylvania Emergency Militia, September 13 - 24, 1862, during the Antietam crisis. In response to the Gettysburg crisis, he next enlisted in Juniata County June 30, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 2 as a sergeant with Co. K, 34th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 10, 1863.
