Mary was born Oct 4, 1832 to Charles Dougherty and Rosamund (Hale) Dougherty in Grayson county, Virginia. Her family moved to Hunt county, Texas. Mary married James Carson Preston in Hunt county, Texas in 1864. They had a family of seven children - Charles T. Preston, William T. Preston, John L. Preston, Myrtle R. (Preston) Chilson Van Cleave Stringham, James L. Preston, Carrie V.(Preston) Manning, and Ralph V. Preston. She moved with her husband and family to California in 1868, eventually settling near Glendora, CA in the town of Azusa.
