James was the older brother of Margaret Virginia Dougherty Knott, known as Mother Knott to the visitors at her son's famed Berry farm at Buena Park. Mrs. Knott came to California in 1868 in a wagon train with her parents when she was 3 years old. The searing trip across the Mojave Desert was retold in one of the talking exhibits at the western ghost town developed by her son, Walter Knott, himself a noted historian of the early day mining country.
