Samuel D. Johnson, 77, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012.
The son of Mervie and Annie Aldridge Johnson, Sam was a native of Concord, N.C. He was a Peninsula resident since 1943 and a resident of York County since 1966. Sam graduated from Warwick High School in 1953. After a short time at Newport News Shipbuilding, he served his country in the U.S. Army. Sam was a 1963 graduate of the NASA Apprentice School, and spent 30 years serving America's space agency. After leaving NASA he co-founded a local tech firm, Inductron Corporation. He was an avid gardener. The last years of his life were spent devotedly caring for his wife.
Samuel is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith 'Judy' Johnson; a son, David Johnson and his wife Jennifer, of Henrico, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Elouise Johnson, of Newport News; a sister, Jewel Moon, of Hampton; a brother-in-law, Jim Crawford, of Dare; four beloved grandchildren, Sam, Will, Tim and Caroline; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2012, at Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. C. Douglas Akers officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of his role as a caregiver, the family asks that memorial gifts be sent to The Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern Virginia Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502; or to Providence United Methodist Church. Edition: Final
