The picture that I have posted of Thomas Truitt is from the book, "Descendants of Thomas M. Truitt," by Robert W. Butler II.

According to Thomas's on-line death record, he was the son of Thomas and Mary McCarty Truitt. However, Thomas last name is spelled incorrectly as "Truett," and his birthdate is given incorrectly as February 13, 1841, in that transcription.

The first name of Thomas' mother in the other available records is Catherine. In February 2013, I wrote a researcher in Peoria County, Illinois, asking for information on Thomas. The information that I received gave Thomas's death date as July 18, 1850. According to information found in ancestry.com, Catherine was remarried on September 22, 1850, in Peoria County, Illinois, to Samuel Clifton.

Obituary from Ottumwa Courier, February 12, 1909:

Thomas M. Truitt was born January 3, 1841, in Tippecanoe county, Ind. When about two years of age his parents came to Illinois and settled in Peoria where he lived until manhood. He then moved to Woodford county, near Peoria and began farming. Afterward, he and his family moved upon a farm in Marshall county in which county he resided most of the time until nine years ago when he moved to Washburn, in Woodford county, where he resided until he moved to Agency, Iowa, in the spring of 1908.

Mr. Truitt was united in marriage to Catherine Hodge March 28, 1861. To this union were born eight children, of whom five survive their father, three having died in infancy. Those living who, with his wife and mother and many other relatives, mourn his death are: Hattie B. Jones, Agency, Iowa; Morgan L. Truitt, also of Agency, Iowa; Rev. Owen I. Truitt, of Ragoon, British Burma; Chas. D. Truitt, Minonk, Ill.; and Henry A. Truitt, of Streator, Ill.

Brother Truitt has been a Christian for over forty years, having united with the Methodist church in the year 1867 and has since endeavored to live faithfully to the vows of that consecration. Christ has been his pattern, Faith his anchorage, and Obedience the rule of his life. Nor did he falter in the last hour, though being of excellent health and unaccustomed to suffering much, when the sickness came which proved fatal, he bore it all in resignation and patience, singing at times. Once after singing that old hymn, "Save in the Arms of Jesus," he said, "I thought I had forgotten it." Again he said, "I don't know why it is that I am so happy." As his pastor, he told me that if it was God's will it was all right with him.

Then came the end of this probation life, Sunday evening at 10:05 o'clock, after some hours of unconscious sleep, pain seemed to leave him, he smiled slightly, he folded his arms, and he slipped away from us, leaving the tenant's house of clay for the celestial home.

The funeral was held Wednesday at the M.E. church at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. O.G. Orcutt, assisted by Rev. J.B. Hill. Interment in the Agency cemetery. Contributed.
