Cheboygan Democrat November 1, 1919
Sylvia J. Rife, the daughter of Joseph & Harriet (Dodge) Rife, was born July the 22, 1872, at Mullett Lake, where the M.C. Station now stands. She was 47 years of age July the 22nd, 1912. She was united in marriage to John Davenport October the 10th, 1888 to them were born 13 children, four girls and nine boys in which one death occurred, Maurice a twin passed away October 20, 1915.
Miss Minnie Davenport was called home from Detroit as was also Mr. John Davenport and sons, Ralph, Earl and Harley from Willwin by the death of Mrs. John Davenport. A coincidence was that at the same time the same day and even on the same sheet of paper, John Davenport Sr., and John Davenport Jr., received a telegram that their wives were very ill. The Davenports were working in the same camp. Word has since been received that Mrs. J. Davenport, Jr., of Harbor Springs is getting better, but Mrs. J Davenport Sr., passed away at 10 minutes after 6, Thursday morning, October 30. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Cross Settlement School House, Rev. Williamson of the Episcopal church of Cheboygan conducted the services.
Mrs. Davenport leaves to mourn her loss her husband and twelve children all of whom were here to attend the funeral also a sister, Mrs. Bairs of Mullett Lake and three brothers, Floren Rife, of Cheboygan, Will Rife of Detroit, and Ed Rife of Alberta. Beautiful flowers covered the casket. The family has the sincere sympathy of the neighborhood in the loss of a kind and loving wife and mother. The casket was carried to its last resting place by a brother a nephew and four sons of Mrs. Davenport's.
