She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Jack Stewart Gray, her two daughters, Jaki Gray and Mary Gray McAnally, a grandson, Jackson Whitley, and her sister, Grace Peele. She is predeceased by her parents, Eliva and Ellsworth Ballance, and her brothers and sister: Thurman Ballance, Gamaiel Ballance, Wheeler Ballance, E.B. Ballance, and Myrtis Austin.
Born and raised on Hatteras Island, Mary Louise was an avid fisherman, a supportive and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, as well as a renowned cook. Such was her prowess in the kitchen that many a friend or relative was known to show up "for a visit" just at dinner time.
For many years, Mary was an active member of the Buxton Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Eastern Star, and the Cape Hatteras Angler's Club.
Mary Louise was a true lady in every sense. She took great care to make everyone she met feel at ease, and she loved to entertain. She will be greatly missed.
A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at the Buxton Methodist Church on Thursday, May 24th, at 11AM with the Reverend's Cory Oliver and Charles Moseley officiating
