HATTERAS - William Wheeler Ballance, Sr., 71, of Hatteras, died Thursday, July 11 1991 in a Norfolk, Virginia hospital.

A native of Hatteras, was owner and operator of the Ballance Oil Company and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of the Hatteras United Methodist Church, the Manteo Masonic Lodge #521, AF&AM, was a Tork Rite Mason and a Khedive Temple Shriner.

He was the son of the late Ellsworth and Austin Ballance (should be Lovie Alice Austin) and the husband of Lucy Austin Ballance of the home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his step-mother, Mrs. Elvie Ballance of Hatteras; two sons: Tommy Ballance of Jacksonville, Florida and William W. "Bill" Ballance, Jr. of Hatteras; three sisters: Myrtis Austin of Norfolk, Grace Peele of Hatteras, and Mary Gray of Buxton; and 5 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Hatteras United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 14 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. James Haskins.

Burial will follow in the Ballance Family Cemetery. Twiford's Island Chapel in Hatteras is in charge of arrangements.
