James "Gene" E. Spohn
James Eugene Spohn, age 91, passed from this life Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.
Gene was born September 5, 1920 in Neodosha [Neodesha], KS to the union of Martin and Rosa (Willard) Spohn.
He was married to Ruth Scoles on October 1, 1939, for 72 ½ years.
He proudly served in the United States Army for 18 months as a welder.
He owned and operated Spohn Steel Products in Cardin, OK, Baxter Springs, KS, and Grove, OK, from 1946 to 1985.
He was a member of the Baxter Lodge #71and Scottish Rite of Fort Scott.
He also served on the City Counsel of Baxter Springs, KS.
His hobbies included fishing, woodworking, welding, and fixing things.
He loved spending time with his family.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul and Harvey Spohn; four sisters, Alberta, Mary Lou, Lucille, and Gwendolyn; and one daughter, Barbara Bolin.
He is survived by his wife of 72 ½ years Ruth of the home; one daughter Martha Chakmakian and husband David of Tucson, AZ; four grandchildren, Doug Bolin of Columbus, KS, Karen Chakmakian of Palo Alto, CA, Valerie Harris of Quapaw, OK, Stephen Chakmakian of Phoeniz, AZ; and five great-grandchildren, Chase and Matthew Bolin, Tori and Kolton Harris, and Luke Chakmakian.
A Memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Baxter Cemetery, Baxter Springs, KS.
Pastor Audie Tash will officiate.
In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
