ARCADIA - Services for Joel Gaylon Chandler will be held at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia, LA at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2012. Interment will follow at the Hurricane Cemetery in Athens, LA. The family will receive friends at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Arcadia on Thursday, May 10, 2012 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Joel was born March 1, 1944 to Joe Bertis and Edna Johnston Chandler, and passed away Monday, May 7, 2012 at his residence in Shreveport, LA. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Ardis Chandler and sister Doris Keen. Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Dr. Mary H. Chandler of the home; son Matthew Chandler of Shreveport and daughter Amber Floyd of Bossier City; step-son Craig Lamm of Wilson, NC; grandchildren, Mikee Chandler of Haughton, Tanner Floyd of Bossier City, and Tyler and Clayton Lamm of Wilson, NC; sisters: Cloye Woodard of Arcadia, Johnnie Mae (John) Lear of Arcadia, Ruby Abercrombie of Arcadia, Dorothy Dance of Athens, Peggy Hamel (Bill) of Haughton and special sister and brother-in-law Gloria and Ralph Johnson of Athens; brother-in-law Doug (Katie) Hobgood of Lucama, NC and sister-in-law Mary Gray Hobgood of Wilson, NC. He also leaves his karate family, Clyde and Trish Stanley of Minden, Lonnie (Liz) Workman of Mebane, NC, and Pam (Sky) Johnson of Estes Park, CO. He leaves also his special adopted family, Kevin and Heather McClain and children, Hannah, Michael and Sarah of Shreveport. Joel also leaves behind his dearly loved four-footed family of Rocky, Rosie and Rambo.

In 1974, Joel received his degree in Economics from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. He retired form Lucent Technologies, but he devoted his life to Isshinryu karate. Prior to his ill health, he traveled each year throughout the U.S. to promote Isshinryu karate. He is the author of two books: The Secrets of Isshinryu Karate and Isshinryu Karate: History and Kata. In 2005, he attained the rank of 10th Degree Black Belt.

Special thanks go to Debbie Birky, his home health care nurse, who looked after him with such special care and attention.

Pallbearers will be Clyde Stanley, Kevin McClain, Daryn Clark, Chris Clark, Ricky Wright and Kenny Conly.
