Ben Stanton, Ex-Presiding Judge, Dies

Ben A. Stanton, 76 years old, who served 14 years as a judge of the Buchanan County court, eight years as presiding judge, died about 7:30 this morning at a local hospital where he had been a patient for 12 days. For the past two years, Judge Stanton had been a deputy sheriff and jailer.

First elected in 1922 as judge of the first district, he served with Presiding Judge Frank Buzard (R). He was next elected to the court in 1934, being named from the first district at that time also. He was re-elected from that district in 1936, and in 1938 was elected presiding judge, a post his father had held near the turn of the century. Re-elected in 1942, he was defeated for a third term in 1946.

Born near Agency, Judge Stanton was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. For a number of years, he had been engaged in road maintenance work, in addition to the operation of his farm south of Agency. He served the Agency school board for 20 years. His late residence was at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Steve Grable, RR#1, Faucett. Judge Stanton was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic Lodge at Agency.

Other than his daughter, he is survived by one son, Charles Stanton; one brother Will (Louis) Stanton, both of Agency, and 12 grandchildren.

The body has been removed from Heaton-Bowman's to the home of Mrs. Grable, four miles east of Faucett.
