"The following was printed in The Rockford Chronicle, Vol 34, No. 11, December 12, 1929 :
On the 8th of Dec A. D. 1929 the death Angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Burks and called their mother Mrs. Lucretia Burks to her long-sought home where suffering and death are no more.
Mrs. Burks whose maiden name was Lee, was born May 24th, 1848 which made her at death 81 years 6 months and 14 days. Miss Lee was united in Holy Wedlock to Jeremiah Burks on Nov 21st, 1865 and to this union was were born 13 children, 9 boys and 4 girls: O. E. and T. L. of Rockford; I. A. and A. B. of Kimberly; J. C. Tarrant City; J. T. Deatsville; W. A. of Quitman, Texas; I. J. and Mrs. D. C. Jowers of Whigham, Ga.; and Mrs. S. W. Kelly of Climax, Ga.; and Mrs. L. D. Salter of Mobile; and two having preceded her to the grave, Mrs. J. J. Gandy and L. J.
There are 224 direct descendants, 107 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn our loss. Mr. Burks having preceded her to the grave 33 years ago.
The deceased lived a very beautiful, consistent, Christian life having joined the Primitive Baptist at Liberty Hill about 47 years ago. She was a kind, loving, and affectionate wife, a devoted and patient mother, a true and honorable citizen and neighbor, a beautiful and worthy member of her church. She is gone but not forgotten, therefore we pray the God of all Grace to bless and keep us while we live and enable us to walk so sweetly and leave such sweet and sublime evidence behind to our loved ones after we are gone as this dear one did, passing away in full triumph of a living faith. She was laid to rest at Liberty Hill Cemetery Monday at 2:00 o’clock P.M. Elder D. L. Riley of Alexander City and Rev J. T. Fielding of Rockford conducted the funeral."
