Daughter of Jeremiah "Jerry" and Lucretia D. Lee Burks. One of thirteen children. Nine of her siblings were: John T., Louisa D., Jeptha C., Levi J., Isaiah J., Teeman L., William A., Mary Susan, and Omar (Ommer). Married 20 December 1895 in Coosa County, Alabama. Issue: eleven children. Seven lived to adulthood. About 1916 the family moved to Whigham Georgia. After the death of her husband in 1917 Mamie ran the farm with her young sons help. Her oldest surviving sons, Gene and Gerald moved to Miami, Florida to take advantage of the availability of work in the construction boom of the early twenties. Both boys learned to lay brick in Miami. They eventually moved to Tallahassee where they became general contractors.
