MARTHA JANE SHELTON SHORT, "GRANDMA" SHORT PASSED AWAY FEB. 3.

Mrs. Short, Mother of C. O. Short of this Place, Was a Member of Miller County's Pioneer Families

Mrs. Martha Jane Short, one of Iberia's aged and most highly respected women, died of bronchial pneumonia late Wednesday evening of last week, at the home of her oldest son, Chas. O. Short. Prior to her late illness, Mrs. Short lived at her own home on High St. near the Baptist Church, where she has resided most of the time since the death of her husband a number of years ago.

Carrying out her request made a short time before her death, the body was returned to her home, where funeral services, conducted by Rev. P. J. Eckhoff, pastor of the Congregational church, were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in the Iberia cemetery under direction of Adams & Casy, local funeral directors.

Martha Jane Short, better known as "Grandma Short", was born in Miller County, Missouri, January 25, 1856, daughter of William and Polly Ann Shelton, one of Miller County's pioneer families.
She entered into rest at 8:40 p.m., Feb. 3, 1937, at the home of her son, C. O. Short, at the age of 81 years and 9 days.

On January 16, 1870 she was married to William Reubin Short, who preceded her in death many years ago, a son of one of Iberia's first citizens. To them were born eight children, three having passed away many years ago. Those living to cherish her memory are, C. O. Short, of Iberia, Mo. J. F. Short, of Eldon, Mo.; Elmer Short of Weslaco, Texas; W. B. Short, of Springfield, Mo.; and Mrs. Lulu Prock, of Tuscumbia, Mo. She also leaves two brothers, George and Owen Shelton, thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was a good Christian woman. She united with the Christian church in her early life, but later she united with the Methodist church where she kept her membership to the end.

She was a faithful and loving mother, not only to her own children but to others. She took Lena West (now Mrs. Lena Farnham) whose mother died when she was a baby, into her home and mothered and cared for her just as she did her own children. She had many friends and was loved by all who knew her. All her children, with the exception of Elmer, were with her when the end came.
