Sheriff William A. Berg,
431 Baker street, was in-
stantly killed, and his two
companions and four other
persons were injured when
a big Franklin sedan, driven
by Mrs. ...
Milwaukee, crashed into the
Berg car on State Highway
10, 13 miles east of Stevens
Point, about 4:45 p. m. yes-
terday...
William A. Berg, 54, was born
December 20, 1876, in Sweden. At
the age of four, he came with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Berg,
to this county, and settled first at
Centralia and in the spring of
1881, on an 80-acre tract of wild
land in the town of Sigel. There
he grew to manhood, coming to
the then city of Grand Rapids
about 1900.
Here he married Miss Ella Kob-
za, on January 20, 1905, while he
was employed in the local mill of
the Consolidated Water Power &
Paper Co. On January 13, 1907,
Mr. Berg became a patrolman on
the police force of Grand Rapids
and held that job faithfully for al-
most 22 years. In the autumn of
1928 he was elected sheriff of
Wood county, being accorded the
largest vote ever given a candidate
for that office. He was reelected
in 1930 and was on duty when
killed.
--Family Survives--
Mr. Berg was a member of the
local lodge of the I. O. O. F. He
leaves surviving, his wife; six chil-
dren, Robert, Bertha, Arthur, Wal-
ter, Caroline and Leonard, all of
this city; two grandchildren; two
sisters, Mrs. Peter Engwall and
Mrs. William Bentz, and one broth-
er, Edwin, all of this city.
Funeral services will be held at
2:30 p. m., next Tuesday, July 21,
from the home, 431 Baker street,
to the Krohn & Berard chapel,
Rev. John R. Hoesman officiating.
Interment will be made in Forest
Hill cemetery. The body may be
viewed by his friends at his home
in the Wood county jail after noon
of Saturday.
The statutes provide that in case
of a vacancy in the office of coun-
ty sheriff from death or other
cause, the office shall he filled for
the remainder of the current term
of office through appointment by
the governor of Wisconsin.
