ANTWERP — Hannah E. Gleeson, 92 of 16 Hoyt Avenue died peacefully on Sunday, October 18, 2009.
Born October 29, 1916 in Antwerp, NY, she was the daughter of John M. and Florence Render Gleeson and graduated from Antwerp High School in 1934.
Hannah was a dedicated New York Telephone employee for 36 years. She began her career with New York Telephone in 1943, retiring in 1979, during which time she graduated from CUTOVER training in 1958.
She was a telephone operator in Antwerp, Canton, and Watertown and upon retirement became a Life Member of Telecom / Verizon Pioneers. She also served as an election inspector for Jefferson County for many years.
She was a communicant of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Antwerp and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Philadelphia and taught Catechism for many years.
She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Joseph's Ladies Guild, Fortnightly Club, Antwerp American Legion Auxiliary for 64 years, Antwerp Senior Citizens, Red Hat Society, Antwerp-Philadelphia and was a program aide at the Antwerp Preschool for many years. Hannah was also an American Red Cross trained volunteer, most recently serving in the Ice Storm of 1998.
She enjoyed being a hostess and entertaining at her home for the many clubs and organizations she served, was an avid reader and was well known for her "Aunt Hannah" cookies, doughnuts and pies.
Survivors include a brother, Martin J. Gleeson, Antwerp; a niece, Betty Gleeson Demel, Levelland, TX with whom she resided in the family home; several nieces and nephews.
Two sisters, Julia Booth and Mary Ross and three brothers, John, Wilson and Patrick Gleeson died before her.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St.. Michael's Oratory, Antwerp with Rev. Mark Reilly officiating.
Burial will be at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Antwerp. Call hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hannah's home, 16 Hoyt Avenue, Antwerp.
Donations maybe made to the American Red Cross, Watertown.
