EVANS MILLS - There will be no funeral or calling hours for John B. Gleeson, 83 of 26781 Nellis Rd. The body will be cremated. There will be a spring memorial service.
Mr. Gleeson died Monday at his home, where he was under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County. He had been ill health for some time.
Arrangements are with Frederick Bros Funeral Home, Theresa.
He worked for Borden Co. until the Evans Mills plant closed in 1958. He and his wife then purchased a farm on Nellis Road, where they farmed until 1983, when he sold the farm and retired.
Born May 18, 1918, in Antwerp, son of John M and Florence Render Gleeson, he attended Antwerp schools.
As a young man, he had a trucking business and worked for Bruman Manufacturing Co, Carthage. He was drafted into the Army in April 1942. He served at Fort Knox, Campbell,KY and Camp Chaffee, Ark., before leaving in 1944 for England, France, Belgium and Germany. He was a staff sergeant reconnaissance car commander and fought in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Northern France and the Rhineland and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He had charge of two armored cars that did reconnaissance for new positions. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 20, 1945.
He married Carol Massicks on Dec 31, 1942 at West Point, with the Rev. William E. James officiating.
Mr. Gleeson enjoyed gardening and carpentry.
Surviving besides his wife are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Colleen Williams, Syracuse, Deborah and Milton Jackson, Huntsville, Ala., and Sandy and Randy Thackston, Dexter; a sister, Hannah Gleeson, Antwerp, two brothers, James, Antwerp, and Wilson, Columbus, N.M., three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two sisters, Mary Ross and Julia Booth, a son, John Patrick, and an infant daughter died before him.
